Birchtech commends the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for extending the
compliance deadline for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) regulations from 2029 to
2031. This extension provides potable water utilities with critical time to develop and optimize
cost-effective, site-specific treatment solutions.
Emerging technologies show strong promise for PFAS removal, but the additional two years will
allow utilities to tailor these solutions to their specific water sources and treatment operations.
The EPA’s decision reflects a practical approach to implementation and aligns closely with
Birchtech strategy to support long-term compliance through innovation and cost efficiency.
“At Birchtech, we invested in two dedicated centers to assist water utilities in evaluating the
performance of both virgin and reactivated activated carbon,” said Dr. David Mazyck, Director of
Research and Development at Birchtech.
“With reactivated carbon costing roughly half as much as virgin carbon, utilities now have the
time and resources to incorporate this cost-saving approach into their compliance planning,”
concluded Mazyck.
The anticipated increase in activated carbon usage for PFAS treatment underscores the
importance of thermal reactivation. However, thermal reactivation capacity remains limited,
especially in regions where demand is expected to rise. Birchtech is actively collaborating with
water utilities and engineering consulting firms to develop comprehensive activated carbon
solutions, including expanding thermal reactivation capabilities.
With decades of experience in activated carbon production and reactivation, Birchtech is
uniquely positioned to help utilities meet regulatory requirements while reducing operational
costs and environmental impacts.
